Love is once again in full bloom this Valentine’s season as Dangwa, Manila’s well-known flower market, begins to stir with early buyers searching for the perfect bouquet—each stem carefully chosen, each petal carrying its own quiet message.
As February 14 approaches, the narrow streets slowly fill not only with the scent of fresh flowers but also with students, couples, and practical shoppers hoping to secure the best deals before prices peak.
Flowers remain one of the most popular gifts every February 14. But for practical buyers—especially students—celebrating the Day of Hearts also means planning ahead and sticking to a budget.
For some customers, buying flowers days before February 14 is a strategic move.
“Normally po kasi kapag Valentines on the day na po nagiging mahal na po talaga ang presyo ng mga bulaklak po. Kaya ngayon tingin ko po the best to buy flowers like on before the day po or after the few days,” he said.
Aside from avoiding price hikes, early shoppers also escape the surge of crowds that typically flood Dangwa on the day itself.

As Valentine’s Day nears, buyers at Dangwa Flower Market continue to find their own strategies to ensure they give the “best” gift to their loved ones.
While Valentine’s Day is often associated with couples, it is not exclusively for them; in fact, it is also a celebration for those who value solitude and self-love. For some Filipinos, the occasion serves as an opportunity to pause, reflect, and take a short break from the pressures of school or work. Because of this, some choose to spend the day with loved ones, while others embrace their independence, proving that love can be expressed in many forms.
For singles like Anne, Valentine’s Day is not about waiting for someone else—it’s about choosing herself. She bought flowers not for a partner, but as a small gift to celebrate her own growth and hard work. Instead of grand plans, she intends to spend the day on a simple self-date—resting at home while juggling school requirements as a nursing student.
“My ideal Valentine’s Day? Matulog sa bahay at mag-cram ng school works,” she said with a laugh.
But as many shoppers agree, the value of a present is not measured by its price.
“Giving flowers is to someone who actually is willing to be there for you,” one student told DZRH News after purchasing flowers early at Dangwa.
“Basically, it’s giving for someone who actually cared for you—for someone who truly loves you and was there for you to grow,” he added.Whether spent with a partner, with friends, or alone in quiet self-reflection, February 14 serves as a reminder that love comes in many forms. In the end, it is not the size of the bouquet nor the cost of the celebration that defines the occasion, but the sincerity behind it.
