No tsunami threat was raised in the Philippines following a strong earthquake that struck off the northeastern coast of Japan on Monday, April 20.

As of 3:52 PM, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) announced that the magnitude 7.5 earthquake had a depth of 10 km.

Based on its evaluation, hazardous tsunami waves are possible for coasts located within 300 km of the earthquake epicenter.

The earthquake had a location of 39.9°N, 143.3°E, Off The East Coast Of Honshu, Japan.

Meanwhile, the Philippine Embassy in Tokyo advised Filipinos in the Hokkaido, Aomori, and Iwate prefectures to remain alert and heed official advisories in light of the tsunami warning issued in Japan.

After the quake, Reuters reported that authorities urged residents to stay away from coastal areas where tsunami waves up to three meters (9.84 ft) were expected. Tsunami waves as high as 80 cm were also detected.

An official from Japan's Meteorological Agency (JMA) said at a televised press conference that big aftershocks may occur in the following days and weeks.
