The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has extended the implementation of a no price increase policy on basic necessities and prime commodities until May 10, as global oil price pressures continue due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
DTI Secretary Maria Cristina Roque announced the extension in a media interview in Muntinlupa City, saying the agreement was reached following a new round of discussions with manufacturers and retailers. The earlier commitment covered only until April 30.
“We're not yet in that conversation. Ang pag-uusap muna namin is no price increase for basic necessities and prime commodities. Based on our latest meetings with them, they have extended the ‘no price increase’ for basic necessities and prime commodities up to May 10,” Roque said.
Roque said the move is intended to help consumers cope with the impact of rising fuel prices in the global market, which continue to affect transportation and production costs.
As part of monitoring efforts, the DTI chief also inspected several grocery stores and supermarkets in Muntinlupa City to ensure compliance with suggested retail prices and to verify that no price increases were being implemented on essential goods.
