The Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) has condemned the violent mistreatment of a working K9 named Bingo, after a disturbing video circulated on social media showing the dog being forcefully handled by its trainer.
“These are not isolated cases, but symptoms of a broken system where working animals, who risk their lives in the line of duty and serve with loyalty, courage, and discipline, are seen as lesser beings or treated as disposable tools,” PAWS said in a statement.
According to PAWS, it is now working with Meralco officials and the individual who posted the video to pursue legal action against the handler. The person who filmed the incident has agreed to testify as the primary witness in the case.
Meralco, for its part, has expressed “zero tolerance for animal cruelty” and has ordered an investigation into its service provider, Search and Secure Canine Training Services International (SAS K9), the agency responsible for Bingo’s handler.
PAWS commended Meralco’s swift response and highlighted the company’s long-standing support for animal welfare.
“An act of violence happening even within the premises of committed, compassionate companies underscores the need for all animal welfare advocates to be vigilant,” PAWS said, while urging the public to report cases of cruelty.
“Animals have no voice of their own, and thus it is our moral responsibility to be their voice and to stand firm in their defense,” it added
