Former Taguig City Mayor Lino Cayetano on Sunday expressed full support for his brother, Senate Minority Leader Alan Peter Cayetano’s proposal for all top government officials to resign and pave the way for 'snap elections.'
In a Facebook post, Lino urged his own family to lead by example, declaring that "no Cayetano should run in 2028" elections.
"I support this proposal. I agree with my brother Alan and ask that we start with ourselves," Lino said.
"Give up power. And this movement for real transformation will be a legacy our Father will be truly proud of," he added.
Lino emphasized that such a bold act would show sincerity and prove that the proposal is not a political gimmick tied to Senate maneuverings or personal ambition.
"Hindi naman siguro ito gimmick konektado sa plano at gulo sa Senado kundi sinserong ideya para masagot and hiling at galit ng tao," he added.
Lino also challenged his brother to set the example by being the first to step down, saying the Senate would "function without the Cayetanos," while Taguig has a capable vice mayor and a stable local government.
"The Cayetano political party has had 15 years to run Taguig City and institute reform. Matibay na dapat ito," he said.
"If you truly believe what you say then trust and have faith that if some of the old guard step down now - it will inspire others to follow," he emphasized.
He added that giving up power would demonstrate to Filipinos—and the world—that the current generation of leaders is ready to make space for the next generation.
On October 5, Senator Alan proposed a mass resignation of all elected officials—from the President and Vice President down to senators and members of Congress—to allow a clean slate and a "new beginning" through snap elections. He also suggested that no incumbent official should be allowed to run for one election cycle.
"People have lost trust in government and its officials. So here’s a thought: What if we all just resign and allow a snap election? From the President, Vice President, Senate, and Congress—with one important addition: no incumbent can run for one election cycle," he said.
The younger Cayetano said that while the idea is radical, it might be the only way to achieve genuine reform and rebuild faith in the country’s political system.
"Maybe this is the best proposal yet. Ano man ang intensyon nito - baka ito nanga ang natatanging solusyon. Pero kailangan ipakita na sinsero tayo. Let go of power - then people will believe," he said.
"For the status quo to step down may be the only way to give our country a chance—baka ito lang ang pag-asa natin sa tunay na pagbabago," he added.
He further urged the leaders to show courage and sincerity.
"Be that one Sen Alan and you will be remembered by all sides as someone who laid the groundwork for real change," he said. "Pakita natin na hindi ito gimmick na konektado nanaman sa politika ng Senado at rigodon ng mga politiko."
"Our people are tired and angry, and the Filipino, contrary to what some believe - are honest, hard working, frustrated and hungry for Change," he concluded.
