The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) said it is closely monitoring the condition of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) following a magnitude 7.1 earthquake that struck Kumamoto in southern Japan on July 28.

In a statement, the DMW said no injuries or fatalities involving Filipino nationals have been reported as of its latest advisory.

The agency, through the Migrant Workers Office (MWO) and the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) in Osaka, is coordinating with the Philippine Consulate General and the Filipino community to ensure the safety and welfare of OFWs in the affected areas.

The quake struck at 4:27 p.m. local time, prompting authorities to assess potential damage and risks in parts of Kyushu and nearby regions.

The DMW urged Filipinos in the area to remain vigilant and prepare for possible aftershocks. It also advised them to monitor official updates from local authorities and the Japan Meteorological Agency.

Filipinos needing assistance may contact the MWO or the Philippine Consulate General in Osaka, as well as DMW hotlines, the agency said.

The DMW added that it will issue further advisories as more information becomes available.
