The Palace announced on Thursday that CALABARZON Regional Director PBGen. Hansel Marantan’s service will not be extended.

Previously, Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Jonvic Remulla requested a one-year active service extension for Marantan, with the regional police director turning 56—the mandatory police retirement age—on July 10.

While Malacañang denied Remulla’s request for Marantan’s service extension, it conceded that he could be of further use in other ways.

“Wala pong extension para kay General Marantan. At maaari po siyang makatulong sa ibang pamamaraan,” said Palace Press Officer Claire Castro during a press briefing.

In a letter to the National Police Commission (NAPOLCOM), Remulla said the extension request was put forth in an endeavor to ensure the continuity of the “critical and ongoing high-impact operations” that Marantan is at the helm of.

In 2014, Marantan was dismissed from service in connection with his alleged involvement in a shoot-out in Atimonan, Quezon province. The incident left 13 individuals dead after a two-vehicle convoy reportedly ignored a first checkpoint in the town.

Three years later, in 2017, Marantan was reinstated with the NAPOLCOM appellate board’s approval. In 2025, he and 11 other police officers were acquitted on murder charges by a Manila court, according to online reports.
