The National Kidney and Transplant Institute (NKTI) said Sunday it has reached full bed capacity amid a surge in leptospirosis cases and a high volume of patients in its emergency room.

In an advisory issued Aug. 23, the hospital said it would temporarily limit walk-in admissions to prioritize patients requiring emergency care, hospital admission and immediate critical medical intervention.

“Due to the current surge in leptospirosis cases and high patient volume in the Emergency Room (ER), the hospital is currently operating at full bed capacity,” NKTI said.

Patients seeking elective or non-emergency admission were advised to coordinate with their attending physicians and consider other health care facilities with available beds to avoid prolonged waiting times.

The hospital apologized for the inconvenience and thanked the public for its patience and understanding.

Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection commonly transmitted through contact with water or soil contaminated by the urine of infected animals and can cause severe complications, including kidney failure.
