Actor Niño Muhlach admitted to dozing off behind the wheel while driving his SUV along Marcos Highway in Antipolo City, which led to a severe accident on Sunday.
“I want to be completely clear and honest: the accident was entirely my fault,” Muhlach said in a post shared on social media.
He explained that he was exhausted and, it being a Sunday when the accident occurred, that his driver was on his regular day off.
The actor made it clear, however, that having been fatigued was no excuse.
“While fatigue overtook me, that is no excuse. Falling asleep at the wheel led directly to hitting a pedestrian and damaging nearby establishments,” he wrote.
Muhlach said his priority at present was providing support for the victims of the accident.
“I take full personal and legal responsibility for what happened. My priority right now is ensuring that the affected individual receives all necessary care, support, and medical assistance, and that all damages caused to the properties and establishments are fully compensated and rectified,” he said.
He apologized to the victim, his family, and the owners of the properties damaged in the accident.
“I am deeply sorry to the victim, their family, and everyone affected by my negligence. I am fully cooperating with authorities as this matter is being resolved,” he concluded.
On Sunday, Muhlach reportedly fell asleep while driving his SUV, causing it to veer off the road and hit a man eating at a roadside carinderia, a parked motorcycle, and two establishments—a barber shop and a sari-sari store.
The man at the eatery has been brought to a hospital for treatment.
