NGCP: Visayas grid on red, yellow alerts on Thursday, Aug. 27
by Luwela Amor27 August 2026

Red and yellow alerts were raised over the Visayas grid on Thursday, August 27, due to insufficient power supply, according to the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP).

In an advisory, NGCP said the Visayas grid will be placed under the following alert statuses:

Red Alert

  • 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Yellow Alert

  • 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
  • 8 p.m. to 9 p.m.

NGCP reported an available capacity of 2,344 megawatts (MW) against a peak demand of 2,452 MW.

The grid operator said nine power plants were on forced outage as of August 2026, while 16 other plants were operating at derated capacities. These outages and deratings resulted in a total of 916.2 MW of unavailable capacity.

NGCP cited the following factors that contributed to the red and yellow alert declaration in the Visayas grid:

  • Unavailability of Visayas' large coal plants TVI 1, TVI 2 and KSPC 1
  • Limited power import from Mindanao

NGCP said a red alert is issued when the power supply is insufficient to meet consumer demand and the transmission grid's regulating requirement.

Meanwhile, the grid operator said a yellow alert is declared when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid's contingency requirement.
