The Visayas power grid was placed under a Yellow Alert from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 16, 2026, due to rising demand and the forced outage of several generating units, the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) said.

The NGCP, a state-linked transmission operator, said the alert was triggered by an increase in forecasted electricity demand alongside the unavailability of key power plants.

As of NGCP’s latest assessment, the Visayas grid had an available capacity of 2,658 megawatts (MW) against a demand of 2,492 MW, leaving a narrow operating margin.

It added that six of seven power plants affected by the transmission incident on May 13, or previously placed under unplanned maintenance shutdown, have returned online, restoring a total of 1,510 MW to the power system.

“This additional capacity, together with the typically low demand during weekends, enabled power exports from the Luzon grid to the Visayas grid,” NGCP said.

The grid operator also reported that TVI Unit 1 (169 MW), TVI Unit 2 (169 MW), and PEDC Unit 3 (150 MW) were among those on forced outage, contributing to the tight supply situation in the Visayas.

A Yellow Alert is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement, indicating limited reserve power to cover unexpected disruptions.

Despite the alert in the Visayas, NGCP said the Luzon and Mindanao grids remained under normal operating conditions as of 3:00 p.m.

“Barring any unexpected increase in demand or additional unplanned outages of power facilities, the power situation for this weekend is expected to remain stable,” the NGCP added.
