Several parts of the Visayas experienced power interruptions after the 6.9-magnitude earthquake that struck offshore Cebu on Tuesday evening, September 30, 2025, prompting the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) to raise a Yellow Alert status over the Visayas Grid.

According to NGCP, 27 power plants tripped and went offline, resulting in the loss of 1,444.1 megawatts (MW) from the grid. Sixteen other plants had already been unavailable prior to the quake, while one was operating at derated capacity. This brought the total unavailable capacity to 1,654.7 MW.

An unscheduled outage affected several provinces including Biliran, Leyte, Southern Leyte, Samar, Eastern Samar, and Northern Samar, after the tripping of the Luzon-Visayas link.

Transmission Lines Affected

As of 8:00 AM, October 1, the following lines remain on outage:

  • Daanbantayan-Tabango 230kV L1 & L2

  • Daanbantayan-Compostela 230kV L1 & L2

  • Tabango-Kananga 230kV L1 & L2

  • Kananga-Ormoc 230kV L1

  • Ormoc-Babatngon 138kV L1 & L2

  • Babatngon-Paranas 138kV L1 & L2

  • Paranas-Calbayog 138kV L1 & L2

NGCP reported progress in its restoration efforts, with several lines already re-energized early Wednesday, including the Ubay-Maasin 138kV Line (restored at 4:01 AM), Ormoc-Maasin 138kV L1 (restored at 4:18 AM), and Ormoc-Isabel 138kV Line (restored at 5:11 AM). Restoration of the remaining parts of the Leyte-Samar sub-grid is still ongoing.

Grid Status

Despite the disruptions, NGCP assured the public that power transmission services in Panay, Negros, Cebu, and Bohol are under normal operations. Meanwhile, both the Luzon and Mindanao grids remain stable and unaffected by the incident.

Authorities continue to closely monitor the situation as repair and restoration efforts are carried out in earthquake-hit areas.
