The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) placed the Visayas grid under yellow alert from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, September 25.

Based on NGCP's 8 a.m. update, the Visayas grid has an available capacity of 2,565 megawatts (MW) against a projected peak demand of 2,456 MW during the period.

NGCP said the yellow alert was prompted by the unavailability of three large coal-fired power plants in the Visayas—Therma Visayas Inc. (TVI) Unit 1, Panay Energy Development Corp. (PEDC) Unit 3, and KEPCO SPC Power Corp. (KSPC) Unit 2.

The grid operator also reported that 12 power plants are on forced outage this September, while three plants have been on forced outage since August, two since June, six since May, three since 2025, two since 2024, two since 2023, and one since 2021.

Meanwhile, 17 power plants are operating at derated capacities, resulting in a total of 926.6 MW of unavailable capacity.

NGCP explained that a yellow alert is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid's contingency requirement.
