The next status conferences for the crimes against humanity case against former President Rodrigo Duterte before the International Criminal Court (ICC) have been set for June 23 and July 14, Presiding Judge Joanna Korner announced during the first status conference on Wednesday, May 27.
Korner said she outlined key procedural schedules and filing deadlines for the parties involved during the same hearing.
She likewise noted that the defense is expected to indicate issues and file submissions by October 30, while the legal representatives of victims are expected to submit their trial brief by September 28.
“As indicated this morning, the defense indication of issues and defense to be provided by 30th of October, legal representatives of victims trial brief [by the] 28th of September,” Korner stated.
On agreed facts, the presiding judge said no deadline will be set for now, but encouraged the parties to continue efforts to reach a substantial number of agreements.
She further highlighted that once agreed facts are identified, the legal representatives of victims may be allowed to make submissions for the chamber’s consideration.
Korner also said procedural matters on the conduct of proceedings will follow a framework similar to the Al-Rahman case, which serves as the model for the chamber’s approach.
Furthermore, she added that parties may propose amendments to the procedural framework, provided these are submitted by June 5.
Meanwhile, the ICC Trial Chamber III set November 30, 2026, as the planned trial date for Duterte, subject to a final ruling on whether he is fit to stand trial.
