A newly identified species of miniature frog, Platymantis guiting, is drawing attention for its tiny size and big scientific significance, underscoring the Philippines’ rich yet still largely unexplored biodiversity.

Measuring only about 14 millimeters—roughly the size of a microSD card—P. Guiting is among the smallest frogs ever recorded in the country.

The species is named after Mount Guiting-Guiting and was documented in the forest ecosystems of Sibuyan Island and Tablas Island, where it is considered endemic, meaning it exists nowhere else in the world.

Despite its size, the frog exhibits distinct characteristics, including proportionally shorter limbs and a unique mating or “advertisement” call described as soft, repetitive clicking sounds—features that differentiate it from closely related species.

The discovery was formally confirmed by researchers from the University of Kansas after nearly two decades of study.

The species was first documented in 2004 but was only recently classified as distinct following extensive fieldwork and scientific analysis.

Scientists say the discovery of P. guiting not only adds to the growing list of Philippine wildlife but also highlights the ecological importance of isolated island habitats like those in the Romblon Island Group.

Researchers emphasized that the finding serves as a reminder of both the country’s remarkable natural heritage and the urgent need to protect fragile ecosystems from environmental threats.
