Authorities are investigating after the body of a newborn baby was discovered wrapped in cloth and placed inside a plastic bag at the Estancia Public Cemetery in Barangay Tacbuyan, Estancia, Iloilo.
According to Police Lieutenant Adrian Baligud, Officer-in-Charge of the Estancia Municipal Police Station, the incident was first reported after a minor passing by the cemetery noticed a suspicious plastic bag near the area while on his way home.
The minor, prompted by curiosity and concern, opened the plastic bag and was shocked to find the lifeless body of a baby girl inside. He immediately informed his father, who then reported the discovery to barangay officials and the police.
Authorities said the infant is estimated to be around one week old.
Police Lt. Baligud said an investigation is ongoing to identify the person responsible for abandoning the newborn, with backtracking efforts currently being conducted in the area.
The remains of the infant were later buried following coordination with local authorities.
