Netflix has announced a live-action prequel series to its hit sci-fi horror show “Stranger Things,” with its release scheduled for 2028.
Titled “Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure,” the series will be set in the 1950s, decades before the events of the original show, when a group of friends uncovered a supernatural conspiracy in Hawkins, Indiana.
The announcement was made Friday, Nov. 6, in celebration of Stranger Things Day.
The new series will also take place before the events of the stage play “Stranger Things: The First Shadow,” which explores the troubled past of Henry Creel in Hawkins in 1959.
The Duffer Brothers, creators of the original series, will develop the prequel alongside longtime “Stranger Things” writer Kate Trefry, who will serve as showrunner, co-creator and writer.
BAFTA and Golden Globe-winning director Joe Wright will direct the first three episodes. Production is scheduled to take place in New Mexico.
In a statement, Matt and Ross Duffer described the project as a fresh take on the franchise, featuring a new setting, heroes and villains.
The prequel will expand the “Stranger Things” universe with new characters and mythology while retaining the horror, mystery and supernatural elements that made the original series a global hit.
Since its debut in 2016, “Stranger Things” has garnered more than 1.2 billion views across its first four seasons, according to Netflix.
All five seasons of the original series are available to stream on Netflix.
