Members of the Senate’s ‘new majority bloc’ said they are prepared to donate one month of their salaries to support communities affected by the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck parts of Mindanao on Monday, June 8.

In an online statement, the Senate New Majority expressed solidarity with families and local governments grappling with the aftermath of the disaster, which left widespread damage and displaced residents across several areas.

“The Senate New Majority stands with the families and communities in Mindanao who are now facing the painful work of rescue, relief, rebuilding and recovery after the powerful earthquake,” the statement said.

As part of their personal contribution, the senators said they are willing to give up one month of their salaries to help fund ongoing relief efforts.

“While this is a small contribution, we hope our colleagues in the Minority will join us in this effort. After all, we are senators of all Filipino people.”

The group added that the initiative is an opportunity for the Senate to show unity despite political differences.

“This is a moment when the Senate, whatever its internal divisions, can still speak through one act of shared compassion.”

The Senate New Majority includes Senators Sherwin "Win" Gatchalian, Vicente “Tito” Sotto III, Panfilo "Ping" Lacson, Erwin Tulfo, Raffy Tulfo, Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan, Lito Lapid, Bam Aquino, JV Ejercito, Francis “Chiz” Escudero, Juan Miguel “Migz” Zubiri, and Risa Hontiveros.

Authorities continue to assess the full extent of damage caused by the earthquake, as government agencies and local officials ramp up rescue, relief and rehabilitation operations in affected areas.
