The new P-pop girl group MEI MEI has officially made their debut, introducing a fresh and vibrant concept to the OPM scene as they aim to connect with listeners across different generations.

The group is composed of Alexa, Jhamayka, Ada, Aerise, Thea, Yuni, Dina, and Jessie, who serves as the leader.

Mei Mei is formed under Groovy Garden Records, a label under PULP Music Group.

According to the group’s introduction, their name is inspired by the Filipino tradition of repeating names, with “Mei” chosen as a nod to a commonly used Filipino name.

While the term “Mei Mei” is also associated with a Chinese expression meaning “younger sister,” the group emphasized a distinctly Filipino identity in their branding and concept.

At their debut showcase held at SM Skydome, the group previewed their upcoming debut single titled “Telebong,” a high-energy track inspired by Filipino childhood games.

They also delivered a stripped-down performance of an unreleased ballad titled “Sinta,” highlighting their vocal abilities.

During the launch, a member of the group said they hope their music can connect not only with Gen Z listeners but also with older generations, aiming to create songs that are enjoyable across age groups.

“Gusto naming maka-connect po not only Gen-Z pati po ‘yung other generations to connect through music at para po sila ma-enjoy ‘yung music namin,” a member said.

In an exclusive interview segment at SceneZone by host Angel Cosme, PULP Group CEO and Mei Mei’s producer, Happy Sy-Go, explained that the group is not being positioned strictly as a P-pop act.

She described their sound as leaning more toward novelty dance music rather than traditional pop.

“Producing this group, we don't consider them P-pop because me, personally, I feel their music is not Pinoy pop. It's really more [of a] novelty dance. So they fall [into] that genre,” he said.

Mei Mei is set to release the official music video for “Telebong” on Friday, May 29.
