Almost 90 percent of Yolanda Super Typhoon victims buried in a mass grave in Tacloban, Leyte, have been identified through DNA analysis, said the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Regional Office 8.

According to NBI Regional Director Atty. Jeremy Lotoc, the identified victims’ identities were released before the 13th Yolanda anniversary on November 8, reported RH 32 Jimmy Angay-Angay.

The city government of Tacloban will be provided with the result of the Disaster Victim Identification (DVI), said Lotoc.

Using this, the individual graves at the Yolanda Mass Grave within the Holy Cross Memorial in Barangay Basper may be properly marked so that bereaved families may locate their deceased beloved’s resting place.

The mass grave houses over 2,200 victims, with many still unidentified.

It is hoped that this DNA identification will finally provide bereaved families long-awaited answers as to the location of their buried loved one.
