Nearly 1,000 aftershocks have been recorded following the powerful magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck General Santos City on June 8, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said.

PHIVOLCS reported that as of 6 a.m., a total of 989 aftershocks had been monitored across 289 locations. Of these, 20 were felt by residents.

As of writing, the strongest aftershock was measured at magnitude 6.7, while the weakest was recorded at magnitude 1.3, according to the agency.

Meanwhile, the death toll from the quake has risen to 37, the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) said.

Of the fatalities, 33 were reported in Region 12, while four were recorded in Region 11.

Authorities continue to monitor aftershock activity and assess damage in affected areas, as response teams remain on alert for further developments.
