Security has been tightened around the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) as more than a thousand police personnel were deployed for the 59th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, authorities said Thursday.

The National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) said a total of 1,157 police officers have been stationed in and around the venue to ensure order and safety during the high-level gathering, as reported by RH Jecelle Ricafort.

NCRPO Director Maj. Gen. Anthony Aberin told DZRH News that at least 150 personnel from the Civil Disturbance Management Unit have been placed on standby near the PICC complex.

Security measures were further reinforced following a commotion between protesters and police in front of the Aliw Theatre on Wednesday morning.

Authorities have since tightened access control, including requiring members of the media along Dela Rama Street leading to the PICC to present ASEAN identification badges. This marks a shift from the previous day, when journalists were allowed to enter the area more freely.

Police also restricted video recording at the authorities’ command post near Gate 3 of the PICC, citing security protocols.

The ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting is one of the region’s key diplomatic gatherings, bringing together top diplomats from Southeast Asian nations and dialogue partners.
