The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) said it will issue a subpoena for several Philippine Southeast Asian Games Organizing Committee (PHISGOC) officials to aid its probe into reported irregularities in the funding of a sports complex used for the 2019 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games.

According to a Friday report by RH 15 Jecelle Ricafort, NBI Director Atty. Melvin Matibag said PHISGOC Chairman Ramon Suzara, Chief Financial Officer Dexter Estacio, and Corporate Secretary John Lester Buenconsejo are among the officials to be summoned.

The NBI will be issuing the subpoena on Monday, Matibag said, with the subpoenaed officials to appear before the bureau on Friday, July 24.

Earlier, Matibag clarified that their investigation will center on the billions in unliquidated funds supposedly used for the 2019 SEA Games, overseen by PHISGOC under the leadership of now-Senator Alan Peter Cayetano.

The bureau will be looking into issues such as the controversial street food served to SEA Games attendees, the ₱50,000 pot, the purportedly unpaid travel agencies, uniforms, and allowances for athletes, along with the allegation that part of the PHISGOC funds came from confidential funds.

Senator Cayetano criticized Matibag after the latter announced that the NBI was planning to probe the procurements for the 2019 SEA Games, which were hosted in the Philippines.

“Investigate whatever you want to investigate. You want to investigate bakit ako nagpatubo ng balbas? Investigate mo, no problem with me. Pero huwag mo nang i-announce,” Cayetano mocked the director.
