The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has submitted the supplemental documents required by Interpol in connection with the Philippines’ request for a red notice against resigned Congressman Zaldy Co, RH Jecelle Ricafort reported.
NBI spokesperson Palmer Mallari confirmed to DZRH News on February 11 that the submission was made ahead of Interpol’s deadline for evaluating the country’s request. The additional documents were sourced from the Department of Justice (DOJ), the Office of the Ombudsman, and the Sandiganbayan.
Mallari emphasized that the move is part of standard Interpol procedure and should not be interpreted as a judgment on the case or as an indication that the NBI’s earlier submissions were insufficient. He added that the NBI’s International Operations Division continues efforts to track Co’s whereabouts through coordination with foreign law enforcement counterparts.
A red notice is an international alert issued by Interpol requesting member countries to locate and provisionally arrest a person pending extradition. While it is not an arrest warrant, it signals that a court case or warrant exists in the requesting country.
Earlier, Co’s legal counsel, Atty. Ruy Rondain told DZRH that his client intends to return to the Philippines once there is no longer any perceived threat to his life. Rondain also denied claims that the former lawmaker is attempting to negotiate with the government, contradicting statements made by Ombudsman Samuel “Boying” Remulla.
Interpol is expected to evaluate the Philippine government’s request after reviewing the submitted documents.
