The NBI Retirees and Ex-Employees Association Inc. (NBI-REXEAI) released a statement expressing “profound disappointment” with Batangas 1st District Rep. Leandro Leviste, who previously called the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) the “National Bureau of Imbento.”

According to the organization’s president, Atty. Ricardo Diaz, the lawmaker was not only downplaying the importance of the bureau’s role, but also insulting those who have dedicated their careers to serving and protecting communities, reported RH 15 Jecelle Ricafort.

Leviste’s remark demonstrated a lack of respect for the integrity of the law enforcement agency, Diaz said.

“While we understand that humor can sometimes serve as a means of coping with serious matters, your choice of words does not amuse us. Instead, it reflects a troubling disregard for the integrity of a vital law enforcement agency that has dedicated itself to upholding justice to our nation,” the statement read.

Furthermore, Diaz said that Leviste’s statement risks undermining public trust in the institution, which is already facing criticism. He reminded the lawmaker that his public office carries responsibility and influence.

At a time when law enforcement agencies must double their efforts, such disparaging remarks only weaken their position, he said.

“Your comments may have been intended as a lighthearted quip, but they carry significant weight. The NBI operates at the forefront of law enforcement, tackling some of the most pressing issues facing our society,” Diaz wrote.

“Your remarks risk eroding public trust in an institution that is already facing scrutiny. In an era where law enforcement agencies must work tirelessly to maintain their integrity and credibility, dismissive comments only serve to weaken their position and effectiveness,” he added.

Previously, Leviste called the NBI the “National Bureau of Imbento” in a social media post after the bureau recommended qualified human trafficking charges be pressed against him, in connection with his alleged role in the reported sex scandal plot to frame Executive Secretary Ralph Recto.

The bureau, the young congressman said, was simply inventing nonsense on taxpayer money.
