Justice Secretary Fredderick Vida on Thursday confirmed that Philippine authorities may now enforce the arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) against Sen. Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa over his alleged role in the Duterte administration’s war on drugs.
Vida said the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), along with the Philippine National Police (PNP), has been authorized to carry out the arrest, describing the senator as effectively a fugitive who must face the charges before the international tribunal.
“The National Bureau of Investigation are now tasked to effect the arrest of Sen. Bato dela Rosa,” Vida said.
The justice chief added that dela Rosa, who served as the former chief of the Philippine National Police and was a key figure in the anti-drug campaign, should answer allegations linking him as a co-perpetrator in crimes under the ICC’s jurisdiction.
Vida also warned individuals who may be assisting or harboring the senator that they could face legal consequences not only under Philippine law but also under international law.
“Those who might be aiding or abetting or helping Sen. Bato evade the law, there are consequences,” he said.
The ICC has been investigating alleged crimes against humanity tied to the controversial anti-drug campaign launched during former President Rodrigo Duterte’s administration, which drew widespread criticism from human rights groups over thousands of deaths linked to police operations.
