The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has identified former beauty queen-turned-vlogger CJ Hirro as a person of interest in the alleged ₱350-million extortion case involving officials of Peanut Gallery Media Network (PGMN).
The investigation stems from accusations that PGMN founder and CEO Franco Mabanta and his group attempted to extort money from former House Speaker Martin Romualdez.
In an ambush interview, NBI Director Melvin Matibag confirmed that Hirro would be summoned as part of the bureau’s ongoing investigation after her name appeared in the complaint affidavit filed by a longtime aide of Romualdez.
According to Matibag, investigators are currently examining the participation of several individuals connected to PGMN, including Hirro, who allegedly appeared in a video clip being reviewed by authorities.
“Yung video na ginamit na clip, siya yung nandodood eh. So we are investigating; this is a continuing investigation. Tinitingnan namin yung mga participation ng mga individuals,” Matibag said.
The NBI chief stressed that while Hirro could have already been included earlier in the complaint, the bureau chose to exercise caution and strictly observe due process.
“But we want to exercise caution and the NBI would like to follow the rules. Sobra na, bigyan natin sila na mas sobra pa doon sa requirement ng due process para huwag sabihin ng politika,” he added.
Matibag also strongly denied allegations by Mabanta that the NBI operation was a “setup,” calling the accusation unfair to bureau operatives who, he said, acted based on evidence and proper legal procedure.
The NBI said the investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue to determine the possible involvement of other personalities linked to Peanut Gallery Media Network in the alleged extortion attempt.
