The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has launched an investigation into the shooting incident at the Ateneo de Zamboanga University (AdZU) Junior High School that claimed the lives of two students.

On Wednesday, NBI Director Atty. Melvin Matibag told reporters that the bureau is looking into whether the shooting was connected to other past, similarly violent incidents that have occurred in other schools.

“We have conducted an investigation. But we will coordinate with the PNP (Philippine National Police) dahil nagi-imbestiga din sila… At the end of our investigation, we will have a coordination then submit the investigation report,” he told reporters.

“Ang problema rito, ‘yung subject mismo, ‘yung namaril, he also took his life. Ang tinitingnan namin dito if this is related doon sa iba pang mga nangyari na matagal na ring sinusundan at iniimbestigahan,” he added.

In addition, Matibag said the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident must be probed before determining whether the school administration can be held liable.

After having fatally shot a schoolmate in the 10th grade on the fourth floor, the eighth-grade suspect reportedly climbed onto the fifth floor, where he shot himself yesterday, August 18.

The shooter livestreamed the incident, according to reports.

This incident comes just two months after the violent Tacloban school shooting, where a fourteen- and fifteen-year-old opened fire at a classroom, killing three, and leaving 20 more injured.
