The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Director Jaime Santiago has resigned from his post, tendering his ‘irrevocable resignation’ on Friday, August 15.
In a letter addressed to President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., Santiago requested that his resignation take effect immediately upon the appointment of his reliever. This was to ensure that the operations and flow within the agency would not be disrupted.
Citing his experience as a former police officer, prosecutor, and judge, Santiago said he steered the Bureau with his best leg forward.
“However, detractors and those who have sinister interest in my position incessantly make moves to blemish my reputation. Those covert moves started when I tendered my courtesy resignation in respond to your call,” he wrote. “To my mind, lies, if repeated overtime, will give a semblance of truth.”
“I cannot allow this, seemingly orchestrated move to blacken my reputation which I molded through the years,” he added.
Santiago did not elaborate on the said “orchestrated move” nor name anyone behind it.
In an update by RH Leth Narciso, Palace Press officer Claire Castro confirmed that Santiago had already submitted his resignation. However, she clarified that the President has yet to comment on the matter.
On June 14, 2024, Santiago assumed the position of NBI Chief.
