The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) on Monday firmly rejected accusations made by former Congressman Mike Defensor regarding the alleged beating, unlawful detention, and supposed covert departure of John Paul Estrada — the aide of resigned Ako Bicol Rep. Zaldy Co — and Estrada’s wife.

In a press statement dated November 17, 2025, the NBI described the claims as “unfounded, unsupported by evidence, and purely speculative.”

According to the Bureau, no complaint, report, or medical record indicates that Estrada or his wife suffered any physical harm. The agency also stressed that there is no record showing the couple was ever taken into NBI custody.

The NBI added that it has coordinated with the Bureau of Immigration and is awaiting an official response regarding the couple’s alleged departure from the country.

The agency denounced what it called false and malicious statements aimed at damaging the NBI’s integrity.

“We reaffirm our commitment to transparency, due process, and the rule of law. The Bureau remains fully open to any formal investigation and welcomes any legitimate inquiry to establish the truth,” the statement read.

The NBI also urged Defensor to present concrete evidence to support his allegations. The former lawmaker, according to the agency, previously assured them he would submit material proof.

“Should the evidence so warrant, the Bureau shall proceed with the appropriate investigative actions. Absent any credible proof, these allegations remain unfounded, cannot be given weight, and may even lead to prosecution for its malicious intent to undermine the credibility and integrity of the Bureau,” the NBI warned.

The Bureau reiterated that until verified evidence is submitted, Defensor’s claims will be treated as baseless.
