A Filipino citizen holding U.S. nationality was arrested in Pasay City for allegedly selling counterfeit U.S. dollars and treasury bonds worth $200 million, equivalent to approximately ₱12 billion.
In the report of DZRH's Jecelle Ricafort, the National Bureau of Investigation’s Criminal Intelligence Division (NBI-CID) conducted a three-month investigation and surveillance operation, which culminated in a test bust at a local mall. The operation was carried out with technical assistance from the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP).
NBI Director Atty. Melvin Matibag lauded the operation, stating, “The seizure of a staggering ₱12 billion in counterfeit U.S. currency is a testament to the precision of intelligence-sharing with the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas.
This operation is not merely an arrest; it is a decisive blow against a multi-billion peso threat to our financial integrity. We remain relentless in our mission to dismantle these syndicates and protect the public from such massive-scale deceit.”
Authorities have yet to release further details about the suspect’s identity or possible accomplices, but the NBI emphasized that the investigation into the syndicate’s network is ongoing.
