The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has arrested former broadcaster Jay Sonza in connection with allegations that he spread false information online regarding the health condition of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.
Authorities said the arrest was executed based on a warrant issued in relation to complaints citing alleged violations tied to the dissemination of misleading content, which reportedly caused public concern.
Sonza is currently in NBI custody as legal procedures move forward.
In a statement, his counsel Atty. Mark Tolentino confirmed the arrest and said they are closely monitoring the situation to ensure Sonza’s rights are protected.
“Inaaresto ngayon si Jay Sonza ng National Bureau of Investigation batay sa isang warrant of arrest. Papunta na kami sa NBI Pasay upang tiyakin na ganap na iginagalang ang kanyang mga karapatan,” Tolentino said.
In a separate and expanded statement, Kuya Mark Tolentino, counsel for both Jay Sonza and Eric Celiz, raised concerns over the legal basis of the charges and the classification of the offense as non-bailable.
“Ang kasong ‘unlawful publication’ in relation to cybercrime sa ilalim ng Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012 at Revised Penal Code ay hindi punishable ng reclusion perpetua o life imprisonment. Samakatuwid, ito ay bailable as a matter of right," the statement read.
"Ang pagturing dito bilang non-bailable sa warrant laban kina Jay Sonza at Eric Celiz ay maling aplikasyon ng batas,” Tolentino added.
The NBI has yet to release further details on the specific charges, while legal counsels are expected to file motions challenging the warrant and seeking the accused’s release on bail.
Further developments are anticipated as the case progresses.
