After more than two decades of dominating the hardwood, NBA superstar Chris Paul has officially announced his retirement from professional basketball, closing a career that many consider Hall of Fame-worthy.
Paul, 40, shared the news on social media, reflecting on a journey that spanned 21 seasons, three decades, and countless memorable moments.
“This is it! After over 21 years I'm stepping away from basketball,” Paul wrote. “While this chapter of being an ‘NBA player’ is done, the game of basketball will forever be engrained in the DNA of my life.”
Known for his leadership, competitiveness, and unrelenting work ethic, Paul leaves behind a resume that cements his legacy among the sport’s all-time greats:
-
12× NBA All-Star
-
11× All-NBA selections
-
9× All-Defensive Team honors
-
5× NBA assists leader
-
6× steals leader
-
Named to the NBA 75th Anniversary Team
In his heartfelt post, Paul recounted the game’s deep personal impact: from early mornings at the gym, to playing through the pain of injuries, to scoring 61 points in a game amid personal tragedy.
He acknowledged the sacrifices made over the years on the road, especially during six seasons spent away from his family, and expressed excitement about focusing on his wife Jada and their children, Chris II and Cam.
“The game always gave me a reason to SHOW UP!!! And the true leaders and fighters know that that right there—showing up—is half of the battle,” Paul wrote.
Paul’s career is marked not only by statistics and accolades, but also by his leadership on and off the court. He has been a mentor to younger players, a respected voice in the locker room, and a player who consistently elevated every team he joined.
As he steps away, Paul says he is carrying with him the lessons, relationships, and gratitude that basketball instilled. “I am so excited to take with me to the next chapter all the incredible things basketball has taught me,” he said.
Chris Paul’s departure marks the end of an era, but his influence on the NBA and the game itself will endure for years to come.
