A Philippine Navy officer candidate reportedly died after collapsing during a training activity in Zambales, with initial findings pointing to a suspected heat-related illness, the Navy said Tuesday.

The Philippine Navy confirmed the death of Officer Candidate Aldwayne B. Dulnuan, a member of Naval Officer Candidate Course Class 47, who died on July 22 at Ulticare Medical Center Inc. in Olongapo City.

According to the Navy, Dulnuan collapsed on the morning of July 21 after completing a scheduled 5-kilometer run at Naval Station Leovigildo Gantioqui.

“After completing a scheduled 5-kilometer run … Officer candidate Dulnuan experienced dizziness and severe chills before collapsing,” the Navy said in a statement.

Medical personnel at the station immediately administered first aid at the facility’s dispensary. An initial assessment considered cardiac arrhythmia, heat exhaustion and electrolyte imbalance before Dulnuan was transferred to San Marcelino District Hospital.

The attending physician later recommended admission to an intensive care unit with a working diagnosis of heat stroke. He was subsequently transferred to Ulticare Medical Center Inc., where he continued to receive treatment. His family was notified and arrived at the hospital the same day.

Despite continuous medical care, Dulnuan was pronounced dead at 12:53 p.m. on July 22.

In a separate statement, the Navy said the medical cause of death was identified as a severe infection affecting the central nervous system with a compromised respiratory system.

The service added that an investigation is ongoing to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.

“The Philippine Navy is currently looking into the matter to establish the facts and circumstances surrounding the incident. At this time, it would be premature to comment further while the investigation is ongoing,” it said.

The Navy also said there was no indication of foul play.
