President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. announced that the fire at the Navotas Sanitary Landfill has finally been fully extinguished after burning for exactly a month.
“Tuluyan nang naapula ang sunog sa Navotas landfill,” Marcos said in a Facebook post on Sunday, May 10.
The blaze, which started on April 10 at the former sanitary landfill site, persisted for weeks due to methane gas trapped beneath the waste layers. This made firefighting efforts more difficult for responders on the ground.
At its peak, the fire stretched into its third week and produced thick smoke that affected parts of Metro Manila and nearby Bulacan, prompting concerns over air quality and public health in surrounding communities.
According to Marcos, firefighters, local government units, environmental teams, and national agencies including the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and the Department of Transportation (DOTr) worked continuously to contain the fire and prevent further escalation.
Private sector partners such as San Miguel Corporation, Prime Infra, and SM Prime also provided technical and logistical support.
While the fire has been extinguished, the President ordered concerned agencies to maintain 24/7 monitoring in the area. This includes continued air and water quality testing, thermal scanning to detect any remaining hotspots, and health monitoring for affected residents and responders.
Marcos also expressed gratitude for the technical assistance provided by the Japanese government.
