Prices of the so-called “baklang alimango,” a rare type of mud crab known for having both male and female biological characteristics, are currently ranging from ₱600 to ₱650 per kilogram at the Navotas Fish Port, vendors told DZRH News.

The “baklang alimango,” described in scientific terms as a hermaphrodite mud crab, is considered uncommon and is known for having more fat or roe (“aligue”) compared with typical male or female crabs, as reported by RH Tina Nolasco.

Vendors explained that these crabs are essentially male mud crabs that eventually transition into fully female crabs as they mature. At the stage when they are not yet fully female, they are referred to locally as “bakla.”

At the Navotas Fish Port, the wholesale price of “baklang alimango” is estimated at around P600 per kilogram, which traders said is cheaper compared with other fish ports where prices can exceed ₱1,000 per kilogram.

Meanwhile, male mud crabs are priced lower at ₱500 to ₱550 per kilogram due to higher supply, according to vendors.

Female crabs, along with “baklang alimango,” are sold at ₱600 to ₱650 per kilogram, depending on daily supply and demand.

Vendors also noted physical differences among the crabs. Female crabs have a wide, rounded abdomen resembling the letter “U,” where they carry their eggs, while male crabs have a narrow, pointed abdomen shaped like a “V” or an inverted “T.”

Prices at the fish port fluctuate daily based on catch volume and market demand, traders added.
