Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. on Wednesday has officially been promoted to four-star general in a donning of rank ceremony held at Malacañang, marking his assumption as the 32nd Chief of the police force.
The oath-taking and conferment of the four-star rank were led by President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., who extended his congratulations and support to Nartatez for his leadership and dedication to the police force, according to Palace Press Officer Usec. Claire Castro.
In a press conference, Castro noted that the President recognized the PNP’s vital role in maintaining law and order and ensuring the security of the country.
Upon returning to Camp Crame, Nartatez was welcomed with arrival honors, accompanied by PNP Deputy Chief for Administration, Police Lieutenant General Bernard Banac.
In his speech, Nartatez expressed gratitude to the PNP, his classmates from the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) Class of 1992, and all who have been part of his journey.
He emphasized the importance of unity within the police force as they continue to combat criminality in accordance with the President’s directives.
“Your unity and commitment, together we build a police organization that is operationally capable, morally upright, and responsive to the people we have sworn to protect,” Nartatez said.
Prior to attaining the PNP’s highest rank, MMDA General Manager Nicolas Torre III denied that he had signed an optional retirement from the said post. The issue was later resolved by Malacañang, paving the way for Nartatez' promotion and subsequent appointment as PNP chief.
