A police officer in Camarines Sur reportedly lost his left hand in an encounter with an “armed and unruly” suspect.
In a Saturday statement, National Police Commission (NAPOLCOM) Commissioner Rafael Vicente Calinisan commended Police Staff Sergeant Noli M. Miraña, who serves under the San Jose Municipal Police Station, for his courage and dedication.
“PSSg Miraña and his fellow police officers responded to a report involving an armed and unruly individual. Despite efforts to peacefully engage and calm the suspect, PSSg Miraña was viciously attacked and suffered a severe injury to his left hand,” Calinisan said.
The police commissioner said Miraña’s “sacrifice” was a reminder of the courage and commitment to service necessary for officers on duty.
“His sacrifice is a powerful reminder of the dangers our police officers face in the line of duty and of the courage required to place the safety of others before their own. PSSg Miraña’s bravery and commitment to protect the community deserve the highest recognition and respect,” Calinisan said.
Moreover, Calinisan assured that Miraña’s family will receive the benefits and assistance he is lawfully entitled to.
“We will stand by him as he faces the difficult road to recovery,” he said.
According to online reports, the armed suspect attacked Miraña with a bolo after Miraña and other officers responded to reports of the said suspect running amok.
Although officers attempted to persuade the suspect into surrendering peacefully, the suspect charged at them and slashed at Miraña’s face and left hand, severing it.
The other officers then opened fire at the suspect, hitting him on both thighs. He and Miraña were rushed to the Partido District Hospital, and later transferred to the Bicol Medical Center in Naga City.
