Award-winning actress and singer Nadine Lustre has initiated legal action in response to the alleged relentless and malicious attacks she has been receiving on social media.
Lustre has formally filed a complaint in relation to a violation of the Safe Spaces Act. The move has gained support from the Mamamayang Liberal (ML) Partylist, which the actress also endorses.
In a statement released by incoming Mamamayang Liberal (ML) Partylist Representative Leila de Lima, she emphasized that while their party believes in the power of freedom of expression, this freedom should never be used to undermine truth, dignity, and democracy.
"This is a necessary step in a time when social media is being used to silence voices that speak for justice and reform. Ginagamit ang mga plataporma para buwagin ang makabuluhang diskurso at palitan ito ng galit at paninira," de Lima firmly stated.
"We believe in freedom of expression. Pero ang kalayaang ito ay hindi dapat gamitin laban sa katotohanan, dignidad, at demokrasya. Expression becomes dangerous when it is driven by disinformation and personal malice," she added.
She further emphasized that many of the online posts cannot be dismissed as mere opinions, as they often carry underlying motives and a deliberate intent to silence voices that stand up and speak out.
"We support Nadine. Her case is a stand for truth and accountability. Make no mistake: we will push back against this kind of behavior. Hindi ito katanggap-tanggap. Hindi ito dapat palampasin," she added.
In closing, De Lima expressed appreciation for Lustre’s decisive action and praised her bravery and determination.
