The MV Maria Rebecca of Montenegro Shipping Lines arrived today, January 30, at the Zamboanga City port to temporarily serve the Zamboanga–Lamitan, Basilan route, which recently became unserved following the suspension of Aleson Shipping Lines’ operations.
The vessel, with a capacity of 522 passengers, is expected to resume trips to Lamitan to ensure that the vital sea link between Zamboanga and Basilan remains uninterrupted.
The Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) confirmed that no fare increases will be implemented during this interim service.
Aleson Shipping Lines suspended its entire passenger fleet after the tragic sinking of MV Kerstin 3, which resulted in multiple casualties.
As of the latest data, the death toll from the incident has risen to 29.
Safety inspections on all Aleson vessels are ongoing, along with a comprehensive audit of the company’s Safety Management System.
