Singer-songwriter MRLD has officially announced her departure from O/C Records, marking her transition into an independent music career.
The Cebu-based artist, whose real name is Meriel de Jesus, took to social media over the weekend to share her decision and the reasons behind it.
In an emotional post on March 6, MRLD wrote, “Finally #free :”),” expressing relief and gratitude for reaching this milestone.
However, O/C management told the media that Meriel's contract "is still in full effect." They stated that they had been constantly reminding her about it even before the issue came out.
Two days later, she elaborated on her journey, revealing the challenges she faced as the breadwinner of her family while pursuing her passion for music.
“My parents never wanted me to have any bad blood with people… but they taught me to fight for what's right, especially my rights,” MRLD said.
She added that despite her love for music, her earnings from songs she wrote and produced were minimal. “I deserve more than 5% of the songs I wrote and produced… I went independent because my family needs to eat and live,” she explained.
MRLD also addressed frustrations with the label, noting repeated requests for meetings went unanswered and emphasizing her right to leave after her contract expired.
“Dapat lahat ng tao may karapatang umalis… Tiniis ko na ang limang taon na 'yon, siguro enough na 'yon,” she wrote.
The artist encouraged fans to support independent musicians and called on labels to treat artists fairly. She teased that she will be releasing her own songs soon, promising to work harder to reach audiences worldwide.
