The magnitude 7.4 earthquake that struck Davao Oriental on Friday, October 10, was caused by the movement along the Philippine Trench, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).

DOST-PHIVOLCS Director Dr. Teresito C. Bacolcol urged the public to remain calm but vigilant, emphasizing the need for preparedness rather than fear.

“Instead of being afraid, we have to prepare for it. We must accept our reality that we’re part of the Pacific Ring of Fire,” Bacolcol said.

“Every now and then, we will be jolted by earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and tsunamis. So instead of panicking, we have to prepare," he added.

PHIVOLCS said the tremors of earthquakes were easily detected and recorded through its advanced seismic monitoring network composed of Satellite-Telemetered Seismic Stations (STSS), Staff Controlled Seismic Stations (SCSS), and Volcano Observatories strategically located across the country.

The PHIVOLCS chief reiterated that the agency continues to enhance its monitoring and response capabilities to provide timely and accurate information on earthquakes and possible tsunami events.

PHIVOLCS also highlighted its ongoing efforts to train and upskill its personnel, ensuring that scientific knowledge and rapid response strategies are continuously improved to better serve the Filipino people during disasters.
