At least 18 people were injured after a modern jeepney and an armored vehicle collided early Friday morning at the intersection of Miriam Defensor Santiago Avenue and Quezon Avenue, authorities said.

According to a report by RH Val Gonzales, several passengers were trapped inside the modern jeepney after the impact caused the vehicle to overturn. Rescue teams broke the rear windshield to extract those pinned inside.

The jeepney was carrying 24 passengers at the time of the crash, according to its conductor. Among those injured were a person with disability and a dialysis patient, as well as the jeepney driver.

Initial reports said the public utility vehicle came from Montalban and was traveling along Miriam Defensor Santiago Avenue when the accident occurred.

The conductor claimed the armored vehicle was moving at high speed prior to the collision.

The driver of the armored vehicle, however, said he was coming from North Avenue and crossing toward Miriam Defensor Santiago Avenue on his way home to the BIR Road area.

He said the traffic lights in the area were on red, with vehicles at a standstill, and questioned why the jeepney continued moving.

The jeepney driver disputed this, saying the armored vehicle struck the side of the jeepney, causing it to topple.

“Kung ako ay nag-beating the red light dapat bumangga ako sa unahan, eh sa tagiliran yung bangga ko, sa kanan,” the jeepney driver said.

As of 7:30 a.m., traffic flow in the area had returned to normal, with personnel clearing debris left by the collision.

Authorities from the Quezon City traffic sector are continuing their investigation to determine the cause of the crash.
