The Kanlaon Volcano experienced a moderately explosive eruption on Thursday, February 19, 2026, at 4:39 p.m., lasting approximately two minutes, according to seismic monitoring.

The eruption produced a dark gray plume that rose 2,000 meters above the summit and drifted southwest. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported that pyroclastic density currents (PDCs) descended the southern and southwestern upper slopes within one kilometer of the crater, as confirmed by the Kanlaon Volcano Network’s monitoring cameras.

Authorities maintain Alert Level 2 over Kanlaon Volcano, warning residents and tourists that entry into the 4-kilometer-radius Permanent Danger Zone is strictly prohibited due to ongoing hazards. Alert Level 2 signals that the volcano is exhibiting moderate unrest with minor eruptions possible.

PHIVOLCS advised local government units, residents, and visitors to remain vigilant, monitor official advisories, and avoid river channels and low-lying areas that may be affected by volcanic flows or lahars, especially during heavy rainfall. Volcanologists continue to closely monitor seismic activity, gas emissions, and crater conditions for signs of further eruptive events.

Kanlaon Volcano, the highest peak in Negros Island at 2,465 meters, is one of the most active volcanoes in the Philippines, with frequent phreatic and magmatic eruptions recorded in its history.
