The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has released a list of the top 20 traffic violations and their corresponding fines and penalties for first and repeat offenses, after the agency reinstated its no-contact apprehension policy.
While the lightest fines are around ₱100 only, graver and repeat offenses warrant fines as high as ₱10,000.
Wearing slippers while behind the wheel entails a fine of ₱100 on the first, second, and third offenses, whereas illegal turning and failure to carry, present, or surrender one’s driver’s license will cost violators ₱150 on the first through third offenses.
Owners of illegally parked vehicles will face hefty fines: ₱2,000 for unattended vehicles and ₱1,000 for attended ones, applicable from the first to third instance. Moreover, unattended vehicles will be impounded.
Failure to wear a seatbelt comes with a fine of ₱1,000 on the first offense, ₱2,000 on the second, and ₱5,000 on the third, on top of a one-week suspension. Not wearing a crash helmet warrants ₱1,500 the first time, ₱3,000 on the second, ₱5,000 on the third, and ₱10,000 for the fourth, in which case the motorist will also have their license confiscated.
The MMDA reminded the public that observing traffic rules and regulations maintains order and safety on the road, and that discipline must be practiced at all times.
