The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) has expressed its gratitude to FIBA for its prompt decision in classifying Mike Phillips as a “player without restriction,” officially clearing him to play as a local in all international competitions.

Phillips, a 6-foot-8 forward, first showcased his commitment to the national team during the 2023 Southeast Asian Games, where he helped Gilas Pilipinas Men reclaim the gold medal in Cambodia.

“Handa na po akong lumaban para sa ating bansa! Ibibigay ko lahat ng kaya ko at ang buong puso ko! I cannot wait to compete alongside my fellow Filipinos as we continue pushing Philippine basketball forward. Para sa Bayan!” Phillips said.

Phillips also shared his excitement on social media, posting, “Thank You Jesus!! 🙏🇵🇭” following the official announcement.

A star in collegiate basketball, Phillips concluded his UAAP journey in Season 88 by guiding De La Salle University to the men’s basketball title, securing Finals MVP honors in the process.

The two-time UAAP champion delivered an impressive 13.3 points and 13.7 rebounds per game across the three-game Finals series against UP, anchoring the Green Archers on both offense and defense.

With FIBA’s classification, Phillips is now eligible to join Gilas Pilipinas in future international competitions, giving the national team a major boost as it prepares for upcoming tournaments.
