The Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) on Friday, Nov. 6, turned over operational control of more than 2,100 closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) to private operator New NAIA Infra Corp. (NNIC).
In a statement on Saturday, MIAA said the turnover was conducted in accordance with the NAIA Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Concession Agreement.
The transfer was witnessed by Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon, MIAA Senior Assistant General Manager Ma. Lourdes S. J. Reyes, and NNIC Executive Assistant to the President and CEO Cesar M. Chiong.
"The transfer of operational control forms part of the transition of NAIA's operations and maintenance responsibilities to NNIC as the private concessionaire, pursuant to the Concession Agreement," MIAA said.
However, the agency clarified that it would retain its regulatory and oversight functions, including monitoring NNIC's compliance with the concession agreement, performance standards, and service quality requirements.
MIAA also said it would continue working with the Department of Transportation (DOTr), NNIC, and other airport stakeholders to ensure the "safety and security of passengers, airport personnel, and other airport users."
The transfer followed an order by Dizon a week earlier to expedite the long-delayed turnover, which came amid reports of the theft of luxury watches worth P18 million from a French tourist at the airport.
