The Manila Electric Company (Meralco) announced a rate increase of P0.3428 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) for its July 2026 billing period, citing higher generation charges, taxes, and transmission costs.
In an advisory on Friday, the increase brings Meralco’s overall residential rate to P14.8261 per kWh in July from P14.4833 per kWh in June.
For households consuming around 200 kWh per month, the adjustment translates to an additional charge of about P69 in their electricity bill.
Meralco said the increase was mainly driven by the rise in generation charges, which went up by P0.1800 per kWh to P9.2504 per kWh due to higher fuel costs.
Meralco also attributed the higher rates to the scheduled maintenance shutdown of the Malampaya gas facility, as well as increased prices in the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM).
The power distributor added that taxes and higher transmission charges also contributed to the overall adjustment in electricity rates.
