National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Director Atty. Melvin Matibag said he was leaving it up to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s discretion as to whether he should remain head of the bureau amid calls for his ouster, according to a Friday report.
In a report by RH 15 Jecelle Ricafort, the calls came after the shooting incident inside the Senate building in an alleged effort to arrest Senator Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa on May 13.
According to Matibag, it was Senator Imee Marcos’ prerogative to request President Marcos to relieve him from his post, along with NBI-NCR Chief Atty. Emeterio Dongalio Jr. and NBI - Organized and Transnational Crime Division Chief Atty. Jerome Bomediano.
The NBI director said he serves at the pleasure of the President as the appointing authority, asserting that he continues to carry out the bureau’s mandate.
Moreover, he maintained that President Marcos had not given orders to enter the Senate and arrest Dela Rosa.
Earlier, Senator Marcos, the President’s sister, had requested in a letter that the three NBI heads be temporarily relieved from their posts while the investigation into the incident is ongoing.
