The safety of journalists remains one of the major concerns in the country, according to the Commission on Human Rights (CHR).

In an interview with DZTH TV's "Hoy! Bawal 'Yan," CHR Commissioner Atty. Beda Epres emphasized that threats of violence, harassment, and online attacks against media workers remain present.

According to the CHR, media impunity refers to the lack of accountability or punishment for those who threaten or harm journalists. Because of this, a culture persists where many cases go unresolved or fail to reach justice.

One of the main reasons for this is the lack of trust among some journalists in the justice and investigation processes. Some also choose not to file complaints due to fear of possible consequences on their work or personal safety.

The CHR also noted that the online space plays a major role in the rise of threats, including cyber libel and red-tagging. Harassment spreads more quickly on digital platforms, expanding the risks faced by journalists.

Despite this, the CHR continues its efforts through investigations, regional consultations, and coordination with government agencies. Its goal is to strengthen media protection and help reduce ongoing media impunity in the country.
